What is a Pre-filled Message?
A pre-filled message is text that automatically appears in the user's text input field when they click your WhatsApp link. They don't have to type anything; they just hit 'Send'.
This is an incredibly powerful tool for lead generation because it removes the cognitive load of "what do I say?" from the customer.
The Anatomy of the URL
To add a message to a standard WhatsApp link, you must append a URL parameter called text.
https://wa.me/15551234567?text=I'm%20interested%20in%20your%20servicesThe Challenge: URL Encoding
You cannot put standard spaces or special characters (like commas or question marks) directly into a URL, because browsers will break the link. Instead, the text must be URL-encoded.
- A space becomes
%20 - A comma becomes
%2C - A question mark becomes
%3F - A line break becomes
%0A
Manual Example
If you want the message to be: "Hi, I want a quote!"
The encoded URL becomes:
https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20a%20quote%21Why Manual Encoding is a Bad Idea
If you are writing a multi-line message with emojis for a customer support template, manually figuring out the correct % codes is tedious and highly prone to typos. A single mistake can break the entire link.
We highly recommend using a visual tool like our Message Generator. You just type the message as you normally would (including spaces, line breaks, and emojis), and the tool generates the perfectly encoded wa.me URL instantly.
Best Practices for Pre-filled Messages
- Keep it short: Don't write a novel. Write exactly what a human would naturally say to initiate a conversation.
- Use identifiers: If you have multiple ads running, use different messages to identify the source. (e.g., "Hi, I saw your ad on Facebook and want to know more." vs "Hi, I'm coming from Instagram.")
